Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, STCW 78

The Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping has recently issued a notification to all registered owners and operators of ships flying the Cyprus flag and of foreign-flagged ships calling at ports in Cyprus of the latest amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, STCW 78, as amended, and Part A of the Seafarers Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code.

The amendments, which came into force on 1 January 2017 under the tacit acceptance procedure, relate to the mandatory minimum requirements for the training and qualifications of masters, officers, ratings and other personnel on ships subject to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). They apply to Cyprus flagged vessels, foreign-flagged vessels visiting Cyprus ports and all seafarers employed on board Cyprus flagged vessels which are subject to the IGF Code.
